Days of historic heat in southern California came to a spectacular end on Wednesday with thunderstorms, lightening and huge rainbow.
Rain fell steadily in downtown Los Angeles yesterday afternoon as dramatic storm clouds formed over the region, only two days after the highest ever temperatures were recorded.
At the start of the week thermometers hit an astonishing 113F (45C) - beating the previous record set 20 years ago.

The National Weather Service in the U.S. said the humid conditions would now continue in the region until at least Friday, with the storms increasing the threat of wildfires.
Local residents took to Twitter on Wednesday to post their own pictures of the spectacular weather, including a double rainbow over West Hollywood.

Showers and thunderstorms have been reported in parts of northern Los Angeles and San Bernardino during the last 24 hours as temperatures dropped by some ten degrees on Wednesday, with highs of 92F recorded.
Forecasters said they had predicted the dramatic change in weather as subtropical air pushed into the region.

'Today [Wednesday] went pretty much as planned,’ said Southern California Weather Authority Meteorologist Kevin Martin.
'Today was well forecasted by our Special Weather Statement that was issued on Monday'.
Some superstitious local residents though have begun speculating that the spectacular weather may in fact signal something more sinister.
Enrique Santana is quoted by local news station KABC as saying: ‘It's very strange for me - 113-degree weather - it makes you think of 2012 [predicted by some to the date the World will come to an end].’
On Monday thousands of people sought refuge from the incredible heat, with the city of Los Angeles urging people to use parks and recreation facilities, senior centres and libraries as cooling centres.
The blast of intense heat followed an unusually cool summer that often found beaches covered in overcast and whipped by chilly winds.
The above-average temperatures in the region are expected to continue until Saturday and will then fall to lower than normal next week.

  1. I saw these photo's in the Mail...and I think I would have run a mile if I'd been there! I hate thunder and lightening storms..so dangerous. I was unlucky enough to be in aeroplane when a storm was raging..NEVER again! However, spectacular photo's and lets hope it all cools down in the days to come as I know you said how hot it's been! :o)

  3. Hi Michelle

It cracked me up it made the news over there lol.

I love storms...so long as I am inside and can watch them. I'll often go into the garden though if it is a good one.

This is what they call dry lightening which is much more dangerous because of the fires it starts and with no rain to dampen things down.

If we could get some rain with this it would be good but we only got a few spots here.

But yes a cool down would be much appreciated....still pretty hot and the air smells very funny because of all of this but hopefully it'll clear in the next few days.

Gave us an awesome sunset last night though - the whole house was glowing orange :-)

  4. I Love a good Storm. Brilliant photographs. Mind you I wouldn't have wanted to be in that Helicopter in the Picture with the rainbow and lightening. Shame some of the warmth can't come over here. We don't need the rain, get enough of that in Wales..LOL

  6. Sitting here, I can only marvel at those spectacular pictures! Looks like you've been hit by the monsoons! (which, btw, are never menacing, just a welcome guest who tends to overstay sometimes!)

  7. Ha Debbie I wouldn't have wanted to be in the chopper either...that looks scary lol.

I'll trade you the warm for some rain please. Aside from a few drops last night it hasn't rained here since last Christmas :-(

  8. Hi Janice...I did wonder if Mick might have taken the car yesterday but he decided to risk it as I needed to go to the post office in the car.

We had thunder and lightening like mad but no rain other than a few drops which were so pathetic the street dried up in a minute due to the heat...and that was about 9 last night.

I can't wait for a dreary grey wet day :-)

  9. Hi Gagan....the photos are amazing aren't they. And last nights sunset was even more spectacular but my camera battery wasn't charged :-( It looked like the sky was on fire.

Wish the monsoons had bought more rain our way though...we really need it. It literally rained all around us but missed our little patch.

  10. This freakish weather is being experienced world wide even here with our flash floods that hasn't happened in 50 years and then in a span of 1 month, it happened twice.

But no beautiful skyline like yours. Wow wee wooohah! Those are amazing National Geographic moments. Thanks for sharing babe. A rainbow and a lightning, maybe now we have almost seen it all?

I see you have used the pic which doesn't look like you for your profile? Hooray! :):)

  11. Unbelievable!!!! I LOVE that photo of the HOLLYWOOD sign and a bolt of lightening in the background!!! It is so wonderful! We have had a heatwave in the Northern end of the state too but not as intense as yours! No lightening for us :(

I really love a good storm and lightening!!

  13. Hi Susan

Yes I put the photo of that unknown hippy chick up here :-)

Crazy weather seems to be all over at the mo - this is the oddest I've seen and it got worse. We had hail and went on a tornado warning on Saturday. But still now rain for me lol

  14. Patty I love a good storm...unfortunately these dry storms with just thunder and lightening, whilst impressive, do little to clear the air. In fact it smells really horrible when they happen.

Aside from the record breaking heatwaves it has been unseasonably cool here this summer. Which I don't mind one bit :-)
