First off I have to say that this was the most difficult photo I've ever tried to take so I apologize for the picture. It had to go against a black background and although I have dark wood floors, black granite counter and dark wood furniture but it is all shiny which made it insanely hard to get a good picture. These are the best out of about 80 shots lol.

All of the bark has been painted on to the branches then etched with a pin.
You can see that the bottom parts are brown.
There are knots in the bark but the camera isn't picking them up well at all :-(

There will be numerous stages of painting. This stage is the first wash of very dark brown....much darker than it appears in the photos. It gets painted on then wiped off before it dries. This will leave the darkest color deep in the crevices and will add dimension to the piece.
Once that is finished I will add further layers of different colors of paint to get the final effect. This is the time consuming but one of the most fun parts for me as this is where it really comes alive :-)

ReplyDeleteLove how the tree is fanning out! Your bark is very convincing. World cup is almost over , so have you started on the leaves yet? I think that will be the most back breaking part and I can't wait to see your masterpiece. I have yet to see a tree with individually hand cut leaves!

ReplyDeleteThey are not all hand cut though...I'd be here for eternity. I've used a punch and I'll only hand cut the more obvious front ones. You won't even see most of them at the back as it will be pretty thick.
I am still watching the world cup even if we are out but there are plenty of DIY shows on to keep me occupied after :-)
I took it outside but here was nowhere to lay it. Guess it would haev looked cool amongst the weeds though lol.

Wow Jayne. I thought the form of the wires was perfect and now you have surpassed it. I keep looking at the second picture and my eyes say it is a real organic entity. You have magic in your fingers!

ReplyDeleteHi Tabs....woof ! I'll be sad to part with it but it is a custom order and I know it is going to a fab home. A lot of leaves indeed...you should see the callouses on my index finger lol.
ReplyDeleteHi kathi....thanks. The bark is am mixture of paint and molding paste. Molding paste is the consistency of cream and can be bought in most art stores and some Michaels if you are lucky. it is about $15 a jar.
